Description

Vacation home in Cyprus

This vacation home in Cyprus is a traditional form of housing that encloses private family life. Courtyards create microclimates that protect inhabitants from nature’s harsh effects and allow them to live in comfort. These homes were initially intended as shelters for children from outside threats; they can still be found today in educational buildings.

For centuries, courtyards have been an integral part of Cyprus’ architectural styles. In the twentieth century, they even featured in secondary school designs; however, lifestyle and technology changes have seen their use decrease over time. This thesis will assess whether courtyards are still relevant today by comparing them with other building categories and assessing their ability to provide bioclimatic buffer spaces. Furthermore, it will examine the social aspects associated with these structures using reference examples from architects throughout the Mediterranean region.

Due to Cyprus’ changing climate, courtyards have become more and more important in providing a healthy microclimate. Not only do these projects protect inhabitants, but they provide outdoor space for leisure activities as well as direct connections to nature – traditionally found in rural areas where residents could appreciate its stunning beauty.

Many foreign architects have explored the roots of traditional architecture and modernized them for use in contemporary settings. Some even attempted to reintroduce vernacular-style constructions; however, the use of such vacation homes has been declining steadily since the second half of the 20th century.

Why choose this vacation home in Cyprus?

Cypriot architecture has long emphasized the significance of bioclimatic buffer spaces. Courtyards within these buildings offer residents a chance to appreciate nature’s changing colors while also helping regulate indoor temperature.

Le Corbusier stressed the significance of courtyards as places to bring nature indoors and fulfill environmental requirements. Courtyards have become popular elements in architectural designs for schools and universities; depending on their size, courtyard dimensions usually take on a U-shape configuration.

In addition to internal space, courtyards also serve as transitional zones. Here, residents can take pleasure in daily social activities and changes in light. Furthermore, courtyards serve as extensions of the home and offer additional outdoor living areas.

Although the courtyards in this project are not as large as those found in traditional Cypriot rural houses, the new development will be constructed to preserve the beauty of its environment. In addition to gardens, there will be a multipurpose wooden exercise deck, reading and working space, as well as a green wall included in its design.
